“Ishqi, I know, movies have hyped everything a little too much but as tempting as all the mind-reading thing seems, it’s not that realistic. Haan, shayad hum kafi cheeze mehsoos kar sakte hai par har baar kisi ka dil padh pana… itna aasan nahi hota! And you know, maybe… just maybe hum padh bhi le… tab bhi, tab bhi, Ishqi… confession makes everything a lot more easier. Keh kyun nahi deti Bhai se?”
“Kya keh nahi deti? Kuch kehne ke liye ho to kahu na? Na mere paas kehne ke liye kuch hai aur na tumhare Bhai ke paas sunne ke liye.”
“Bhai ne kaha tumse?”
“Uski zaroorat hi nahi padi. I met his girlfriend the last week “
Kartik’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets. “Bhai’s girlfriend? You met Bhai’s girlfriend?”
She nodded.
Momentarily stunned, Kartik couldn’t collect words to form a coherent response as he wondered how she could meet a non-existent person.
“Kaise?”
“Tumhare Bhai ne hi milwaya!”
And that explained everything to Kartik. Shaking his head, he let out some silent curses to see how brutally his brother’s lie had affected her.
He was a part of his brother’s joke when he was teasing her saying that he had a girlfriend, he could move earth and heaven for. He hadn’t realized that his brother was going stretch that for so long.
He hummed, crossing his hands behind his back. “Accha ek baat batao, agar Bhai ki girlfriend nahi hoti to? Kya tumhare paas kuch kehne ke liye hota?”
“Suno na, Kartik… mujhe nahi baat karni iss bare mein.” She tried to escape the conversation but he didn’t let her walk away.
“Ishqi!” Catching up with the steps that she had taken away from him, he stood right behind her. “Tum Bhai ko kabse janti ho?”
“Char mahine.”
“Inn char mahino mein tum humare ghar kitni baar aayi ho?”
“Bohot baar.”
“Kya kabhi bhi, Bhai ki girlfriend mili humare ghar?”
“Nahi.”
“Kya Maa ne tumse kabhi Bhai ke girlfriend ke bare mein koi baat ki?”
His words got her numb mind to run in the full speed as she started to connect the dots that he had just spread in front of her.
His lips curled up in a smile. “Ab hai, kuch kehne ke liye?”
“Bohot kuch hai, tumhare Bhai ko sunane ke liye!”
