The way his eyes lit up and a wide smile stretched across his lips at the glimpse of her narrated the tale of how much he had missed this girl in the past six months.
Taken aback and utterly stunned at the unexpected surprise, he fumbled and he could barely make sense of his incoherent words as he struggled to merely ask her where and how she had been.
The most awaited response from her side was supposed to make him smile wider but it rather snatched the existing smile from his face – the genuine smile that her presence had brought to him after quite a long while.
“Sir, bathroom saaf ho gaya hai.”
And that was when his gaze scrutinized her from head to toe. Clearly, in the overwhelming joy of meeting her after six long months, he hadn’t bothered to pay attention to what she was wearing but the moment he did – his heart wept.
He could barely process the happenings before his eyes, let aside protesting his brother who had just made yet another attempt to put her down more than she already was.
His gentle touch on her shoulder, and his soft yet impatient tone laced with the concern that had left him restless – made a crack in the mask of indifference that she had worn and a tear was about to almost – almost escape her eye – but she caught it in time.
It was futile though because his focus was too precise to let it go unnoticed. Once she bent down to clean the floor stained by his brother – a range of emotions made a brutal hit to his ability to speak.
Helplessness. Rage. Guilt and he himself didn’t know what else was stuck with him at that moment.
The helplessness of watching her suffer and being able to do nothing for her!
Rage at the miseries that fell in her fate that he knew she did not deserve!
Concern about all that she had been dealing with for the past six months!
Shame and guilt of being a part of the family that had ruined this young woman for absolutely no fault of hers!
She might haven’t uttered a word that day but his mere presence was an elixir to her heart that had been poisoned by his brother. In a world full of judgmental fools, he was her very own heart reader who relied on the melodies of his heart, shushing the noises in his mind.
Kartik! The purest friend she has ever had. 💜
