Young Enough & Old Enough

“I need you to let go of me… let go of us, Kshitij. You and I, regardless of how fiercely love each other, have no future together.” Chinmayi wiggled to get out of his hand that had gripped her wrist.

“Kshitij, please,” she urged, tearing her gaze away from his orbs that she knew held the ability to see through her every facade.

“What has suddenly made you realize that we don’t have a future together?” Taking his hand off her wrist, he slipped it around her waist. Sliding his fingers underneath her chin, he lifted her face. “I am asking something, Chinmayi. Hold on. You went shopping with my family yesterday, didn’t you? Someone said something to you?”

She lowered her gaze. “She isn’t wrong, Kshitij! Society will never accept someone like you loving someone like me.”

Kshitij hummed. “You mean someone as lame as me can’t love someone as gorgeously perfect as you?”

Her teary gaze glared at him, forcing his laughter to cease.

“I am a 33-year-old divorcee and you, a 25-year-old -”

“What does that change?” He cut her off in the middle. “You are young enough to be mine and I’m old enough to be yours. And what society are you talking about, Chinmayi? Does this society come to comfort you on the nights you can’t sleep? No, I do, right? Does this society hold me on the days I break down? No, you do, right?”

Her head hung down as she struggled to reveal that his family held the same opinion as that of society.

His lips lingered over her palm. “Miss Chinmayi Sardesai, nothing and absolutely nobody in this entire freaking universe can take me away from you long as you are willing to hold on to us.”
